A man is on the loose after robbing a convenience store and threatening to kill the clerk. The Burke County Sheriff’s Office released a new photo of the wanted man.

The incident happened around 5:31 a.m. Sunday at the Fast Track Convenience Store in Hildebran.

FOX 46 Charlotte spoke one-on-one with the clerk who said the man told her several times that he was going to kill her. She said the entire incident could have been avoided.

“He said he was going to kill me,” Teresa Lane explained.

Lane said she was working the overnight shift Sunday at Fast Track Convenience Store off of Interstate 40 in Hildebran when a man walked in and grabbed her by the wrist.

“He took me to the back room and told me that if I didn’t give him the money, he would kill me,” Lane said.

The manager of the store said she’s furious this happened.

“I’m so mad because the people who work here need the money and these people are stealing it away from them,” the manager said.

The Burke County Sheriff’s Office said the man was driving a mid-1990s gold color Mitsubishi. Lane said her husband, daughter and grand-daughter are all relieved that nothing worse happened. But the clerk and the manager agree the robbery could and should’ve been avoided.

“We always help people out. If they need food or even a pack of cigarettes, we will give it to them.”

The suspect is described as a black male, 5′ tall with dreads, wearing a hoodie and blue jeans.

The Criminal Investigation Division is working the case and anyone having information should contact Crime Stoppers at 828-437-3333.
