Explosion at hydrogen fuel plant in Catawba County damages nearby homes

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — An explosion at a plant in Long View Tuesday morning damaged nearby homes and could be felt miles away. 

The incident occurred at 8:36 a.m. Tuesday, April 7 at OneH2 located at 620 23rd Street Northwest. 

According to the Hickory Fire Department, multiple units responded to the call and were able to get all employees out of the building safely. 

Approximately 60 surrounding homes sustained mostly minor damage from the explosion, and they have all been inspected by Catawba County building inspectors and City of Hickory fire inspectors.

Only one home has been deemed uninhabitable, and the owner is aware and is being assisted. Affected homeowners are advised to contact their home insurance company to begin the reporting process.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
