Driver charged in north Charlotte crash that left one dead

CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46) — A serious crash in north Charlotte resulted in one person dead and three others injured.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department say around 4:41 p.m. on Saturday, 37-year-old Stephanie Bennett was driving a Ford Explorer heading east on Gibbon Road when she drove off the right side of the road.

Bennett then attempted to drive the car back onto the road, but overcorrected to the left and entered back onto the road into the oncoming traffic lane. She overcorrected again to the right and lost control of the car.

Her Ford Explorer drove off the right side of the road, rolled over and came to final stop on its left side approximately 30 feet off the road in a field.

As a result of the crash, the right front passenger, 64-year-old Leonilla Farber, was found dead at the scene. Bennett and two minors in the rear seat were transported to CMC-Main with non-life threatening injuries.

Bennett was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors associated with the crash.

CMPD is still investigating the wreck.

Any person who witnessed the crash or has information about it is asked to call Detective Sammis (704) 432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
