Coyotes killing pets reported over the weekend in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — Coyote attacks were reported in South and North Charlotte via the app Nextdoor over the weekend.

The Country Club Heights neighborhood page reported a “coyote with an orange tabby cat in its mouth.”

“I kind of tracked it going down the road and stood there stunned for a second,” said Katie Elliott, a Country Club Heights resident.

The Montibello neighborhood reported “a small dog…was attacked and killed by coyotes.”

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission said an increase in temperatures can play a role in more coyotes coming out.

Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation said it’s mating season for coyotes, and it typically sees an increase in coyote attacks of pets during this time of year, but added that they’ve never had a coyote attack a person.

The Resources Commission says coyotes can be hunted year-round, but not in areas where there are firearm restrictions — such as Charlotte. The Commission suggests pet owners keep their animals on a leash or inside the home.
