Concord family helps spread autism awareness by sharing their story

CONCORD, NC (WJZY) — Ask any parent, they’ll likely you tell you it can be a little challenging at times. Couple that with being the parent of a special needs child and those challenges can become a bit more taxing.

It’s something Cindy and Michael Meyhew learned after their child DJ was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2.

“It’s a little difficult, we have our struggles, our challenges,” Cindy Meyhew said.

Challenges the mayhem family took in stride, sparking them to become champions for parents with autistic kids by spreading their story.

“DJ goes to parties. He goes to different celebrity events. He meets celebrities but we are meeting them to let them know this is what we are going through as our family journey and we want to spread this to everyone else,” Cindy Meyhew said.

Their goal now to show people their kids can have a normal life and to get out of their comfort zone.

“That opened up more for me to see that you know what that’s something new for DJ and he enjoyed it. So know he gets to go on roller coasters and he gets to have a good time,” Cindy Meyhew said.

In an effort to share their story, Cindy and Michael took to social media, community events anywhere and everywhere they could, to spread their message.

They even poured their experiences into a book called “That’s my DJ,” to be able to help any other family in the area that may have a child with autism.

“Everybody doesn’t fully understand autism. That’s why it’s important that we as parents that have autism children, to help spread awareness so that there is more acceptance,” Michael Mayhew said.

Cindy says that without her son DJ’s condition, she would have never been this active.

“He taught me a lot of things that I would have never known. I would never regret a day of him having autism. I love it,” Cindy Mayhew said.
