CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — FOX 46 has exclusive video that shows the moments when a Charlotte Mecklenburg school bus driver skirts around construction barriers, getting a bus full of kids stuck on an active train track.
Just 30 minutes before the bus got stuck, a CSX train went down the track, showing just how close 10 First Ward Creative Arts Academy students were to danger.
The video is tough to watch, as the CMS bus driver ignores ‘road closed’ barricades, stops her bus on an active railroad crossing and gets off the bus, all with students still inside.
“This is one of those instances you’re supposed to know better,” said Gwen Carter, the parent of one First Ward student.
Only FOX 46’s cameras were there to catch the five-minute-long ordeal, which happened Tuesday morning at 1300 Central Ave.
The road closed barricades caught drivers off guard, as construction wasn’t supposed to start until Wednesday.
“Yeah that’s very frightening,” Romaine Coulter, another First Ward Elementary parent said. “That’s totally disregard for safety,” she said.
The video shows the bus driver exit the bus again, this time to move the barricade to the side to clear a path for her bus.
In a statement, CMS said none of the 10 students on the bus were injured, but the driver is suspended until the investigation is over.
This also added that “the safety and and well-being of students is top priority.”
“She literally put the lives of other people’s children in jeopardy no she needs to be fired. If I had a say she would be fired, she would be gone,” Carter said.
But one big question remains: Why did crews close Central Ave. a day early? Click here to find out.
