CMPD: Shots fired outside Northlake Mall, no injuries

UPDATE: 9/6/16 (1:56 p.m.): The North Lake Mall released the following statement following shots fired outside the mall Monday afternoon.

“The safety of our guests, tenants and employees is our top priority. We work closely with our partners in local, state and federal law enforcement to monitor events in the surrounding neighborhood.

The mall, it tenants and area businesses also take part in ongoing training for a variety of incidents. If one occurs, we respond with local authorities following procedures that are designed for the safety of our guests, tenants and employees.

While our security plans are not publicized, teams are onsite 24/7. We have implemented additional measures, some of which are visible and others that are behind the scenes.”

A tense situation for shoppers Monday afternoon after shots were fired outside of Northlake Mall, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

At approximately 3:14 p.m., officers were called to Northlake Mall Drive in reference to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service with no injuries. 

Police say they were unable to locate any victims or suspects, but did confirm that the shots were fired outside of the mall.  The mall had already been partially evacuated before it was determined that there were no victims. 

A police helicopter could be seen circling the mall. People also appeared to be leaving the mall in droves.

Medic also sent several units to the scene.

Northlake Mall is now back open for business, according to CMPD. Officers will continue to patrol the area for any suspicious activity.

This is not the first shooting to happen around Northlake Mall.

On Dec. 24, 2015, Christmas Eve, a man was killed in a shooting that took place inside the mall as several people were shopping for last minute Christmas gifts.
