CMPD remembers fallen brothers on anniversary of shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) — On this day in 2007 the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department lost two of their own. 

On March 31, 2007, Officers Jeff Shelton and Sean Clark responded to a call about a domestic disturbance at the Timber Ridge Apartments near Milton Road in east Charlotte.

According CMPD’s Twitter page, at about 11:15 p.m., both officers were shot in the parking lot of the apartment complex. Police said they both died at Carolina’s Medical Center early the next morning. 

The community responded to the officers’ deaths with an outpouring of grief, offers of support, and thousands of dollars in donations for the slain officers’ families. 

Shelton, 35, had been a part of the police force for six years. He was married to Jennifer Sparks Shelton. Clark, 34, had been on the force for 14 months. Police said he was married to Sherry Jones Clark. At the time of Officer Clark’s death, they had a 3 1/2 year old son and were awaiting the birth of their second son.
