CMPD investigates Meck Co. Sheriff impersonation scam

Charlotte, NC — CMPD is looking into a recent scam where victims are told they did not show up for jury duty and a warrant for their arrest will be issued if they do not pay the fees.

The victim told CMPD on Sunday she received a message to call the suspect back on her home phone. The woman told police that she called the suspect around noon.

The victim said the suspect identified himself as a Lieutenant with the Mecklenburg Sheriff’s Department. The suspect then told the victim that she did not show up for jury duty on August 28, 2015 and there was a warrant for her arrest if she did not pay fees.

The victim told police she went to a CVS and bought two PayPal My Cash prepaid cards. She told police the suspect advised her that she would be reimbursed.

The woman told police she did not know she had been scammed until she went to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Department and spoke with a deputy.

The incident is still under investigation, according to police.
