CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A man has been arrested in connection to a 1992 sexual assault cold case.

Johnny Calvin Kimble, 55, has been charged with second degree rape and common law robbery for his involvement in this sexual assault cold case.

On November 3, 1992, a 32-year-old female victim told police that while she was at a family member’s house, she met Kimble in the neighborhood.

The victim said that she was walking through the neighborhood with Kimble when he knocked her to the ground. She fought with Kimble, but he overpowered her and sexually assault her.

Kimble then took money from the victim and left the scene. The victim went home and immediately notified police.

Evidence was collected on the day of the assault as part of the preliminary investigation. In 2018, evidence from this case was included for testing as part of a federal grant CMPD received.

DNA evidence confirmed Johnny Kimble as the suspect. Detectives then obtained warrants for Kimble’s arrest.

On April 12, officers found Kimble and he was arrested without incident. He was taken to police headquarters where he was interviewed and subsequently transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

The CMPD Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit has reviewed nearly 3,000 cases since it began in 2006. Of those cases, 266 have been cleared, 83 of which were cleared by arrest, 180 were exceptionally cleared and 3 have been unfounded.

Anyone with information concerning this case or the suspect is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
