CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — FOX 46 is investigating after being flooded with social media messages regarding issues at Lake Arbor Apartments in west Charlotte.
Iyanna Flemming reached out to FOX 46 after receiving a note taped to her door. It had a large emoji smiley face and read, “Guess who’s moving? You!” Flemming lost her job and has yet to pay rent for the current month. That’s why she says management put the note on her door.
“I mean it’s like a big joke to them,” she told FOX 46.
Lasharne Dunlap, who also lives at the apartment complex, says she’s sick from mold growing inside her unit.
“You want their rent money, but then you don’t want to take care of their needs,” she told FOX 46, referring to building management. “I’ve been back to the doctor, back and forth, because of it.”
Dunlap isn’t alone. Lashanna Rogers has a similar story. She told FOX 46 that her 2-year-old son has been suffering, even showing our cameras the mold samples collected from their bedrooms.
“These are the mold samples from the upstairs bedroom from where me and my kids were sleeping at,” she said. “[My son] was bleeding out of his nose and his mouth.”
That’s why Rogers says she’s moved her bed into the living room. Her family is hiding from mold they say is located upstairs.
“They have maintenance people that don’t give a crap about the people over here.”
It gets worse.
Rogers says units across the complex, like hers, have been without air conditioning. It’s one of the reasons why a Facebook post calling out Lake Arbor management has more than 1,000 shares.
Videos of water leaks, roaches, electricity problems and other issues connected to the complex are circulating online.
“So many tenants are hurting right now, including so many families in the neighborhood that’s out of power,” Rogers said.
Rogers claims management is kicking her out for speaking out.
“She refused to accept my payment because I called code enforcement.”
FOX 46 Charlotte confirmed that City of Charlotte Code Enforcement is investigating after Rogers said “she has mold [in her] upstairs bedroom, water leakage from water closet in the downstairs area near electrical cords, and A/C unit doesn’t work properly.”
Code Enforcement says there are violations in this open case for equipment not being maintained, the apartment not being weathertight and a wall covering missing.
More violations might be coming.
As for Dunlap, she says she’s moving out.
Flemming tells FOX 46 that she has their rent money for August, but after the show of disrespect with the smiley-face letter, she’s leaving too.
FOX 46 paid a visit to Lake Arbor Apartments, located off Timberbrook Drive, and tried to speak with management. We were met with the slam of car doors and a beep of the horn.
