A large fire ripped through multiple homes in Indian Land Thursday afternoon.

The massive flames raced down a street in the Sun City Carolina Lakes Community, which is a retirement neighborhood.

Officials told Fox 46 Charlotte the fire started in the grass near the homes when a lit cigarette was dropped. The fire spread quickly in part because of high winds and dry conditions.

The call for service came in around 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Three homes have been destroyed, and at least four others damaged.

No one was in the homes at the time of the flames and no injuries have been reported.

A total of six crews responded to the scene including those from Lancaster County, West Chapel, Fort Mill, Lancaster County and Indian Land.

“It’s horrible,” said a neighbor. “For them to have to start over at this point in their lives.”

Red Cross is assisting families who were displaced because of the fire.
