A six-year-old child is recovering in the hospital after two of his family members passed away from complications, following an apartment fire.

Family members tell Fox 46 Charlotte that Tremayne, 6, is responding well to his treatments for smoke inhalation at a Columbia, SC hospital. His mother, 23-year-old Mechele Morrison, died on Monday. Their cousin, 9-year-old Michael Johnson, passed away as well.

The Charlotte Fire Department was called to the 4100 block of Rose Thorn Place Saturday night for a large apartment complex fire. It took over 36 firefighters, 20 minutes, to control the fire.

Firefighters rescued the three victims from the burning apartment, where they were immediately transferred to area hospitals by Medic for treatment.

Investigators say the fire was caused by unattended cooking on the stove.

At this time, there is no official GoFundMe Page for the family, but they are working on one to help with funeral arrangements. Fox 46 Charlotte will share the link once it is ready.
