Broken water main floods home, shuts down road

CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A geyser sent water spraying 25 feet into the air after a water main broke overnight in north Charlotte. Crews were still on scene Tuesday morning as the neighborhood woke up without running water. It could take several hours before it comes back on.

“The first floor was pretty flooded when we left the house, so I can only imagine,” Jayla Joyner said.

Joyner said she had no choice but to leave her flooded home. Water from a nearby line shot into the sky and on her house, flooding Boomerang Way off of Prosperity Road.

“Earlier we were scared, not sure what was going on because it came out of nowhere,” she said.

“We have one unit more than likely destroyed with damage in all four units and the retention pond has reached the wall,” a member with the Charlotte Fire Department said.

What started as a small leak a couple of weeks ago became a big problem Monday night. At the first site of water, neighbors flooded the City with calls.

“We called the City and that went unanswered for about a week. Then a week ago Monday they sent someone, so it isn’t an HOA problem, it’s a City problem,” Bob Barone, president of the Homeowner’s Association said.

While city crews stopped the water, Joyner and her neighbors hope to dry out soon. “I just hope we have some things in the house we can salvage and the damage isn’t too bad,” she said.

City water crews hope to have the water back on by Tuesday afternoon.
