A death investigation is underway in Gaston County after work crews found a man’s body underneath a bridge.

Police said they’re looking into whether the body is that of a missing elderly man. FOX 46 Charlotte spoke to that man’s son who has a lot of questions.

Ray Jackson, 90, has been missing for nine days. His son doesn’t want anyone to give up hope of finding his father alive, despite the grim news that a man’s body was discovered Monday afternoon down the embankment of a bridge located on Landers Chapel Rd., just about ten miles from Ray’s home.

Gaston County police said the body was intact, but they can’t tell how the man died or if it was Ray Jackson.

Police said NCDOT crews found the body when they were doing bridge work. Ray Jackson’s son said it’s just so difficult not knowing one way or the other if it was his father.

Ray has been missing since March 5, 2017. His son got worried when his dad didn’t answer the phone. When he got to Ray’s home on Old Dallas Highway Ray wasn’t there and his car, a maroon Ford Contour, was gone.

The front door to Ray’s house was cracked open. Investigators can’t say when they will be able to identify the body. The longer it takes, the more the questions linger for Ray’s family and friends.
