Authorities release name of drowning victim in Rowan County quarry

Authorities have released the name of the drowning victim that happened Sunday at the Balfour Quarry.

Several emergency response teams were on scene investigating the drowning at the Balfour Quarry on Balfour Quarry Road in Salisbury just before noon on Sunday.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office deputies say witnesses reported that the victim, 16-year-old Shavice Tandy, went under water while trying to swim across the old quarry. He became fatigued and began to struggle in the water. He was last seen about 60 yards from the bank and did not resurface.

Officials say divers located the body of Tandy around 1:20 p.m. 

Tandy was a student at East Rowan High School. 

In addition to RSCO, Rowan Rescue, Rowan Emergency Services, Rockwell Rural Fire Department, Faith Fire Department, Granite Quarry Fire Department, Miller Ferry Fire Department and NCSHP were on scene assisting each other in the investigation.
