Authorities investigate death at York County Detention Center


YORK COUNTY, SC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A man was found dead at the York County Detention Center early this morning, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office. 

Around 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, a detention officer making rounds was told that an inmate was breathing abnormally by another inmate.

The detention officer immediately called medical emergency staff, administered CPR/first aid and notified Piedmont EMS.

The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Jonathan Paul Morgan of Rock Hill. He had been brought to the detention center around 11:00 p.m. on Monday. 

Morgan had originally been arrested in September for petty larceny, resisting police and furnishing contraband in prison. 

The death is still being investigated by South Carolina Law Enforcement and the York County Sheriff’s Office.

The York County Coroner’s Office is conducting an autopsy, but no foul play is expected.   

No other information has been released at this time.
