Are sex offenders living on your trick-or-treating route?

CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — Mecklenburg County Sheriff Irwin Carmichael wants parents to plan ahead for Halloween so they can research if their children could come in contact with registered sex offenders.

“Go ahead and pre-plan. Pre-plan your trick-or-treat. Where you’re taking your kids,” Carmichael said. “If a person is just a registered sex offender, and they’re not on probation, nothing stops them from passing out candy. Nothing stops them from leaving their light on. Nothing stops them from notifying they’re neighbor.”

This is why Carmichael wants the public to take advantage of two resources that cost nothing for parents to access.

He recommends using the North Carolina Sex Offender registry  or the National Sex Offender Public Website app . You can locate registered offenders and how far their away from an address.

In Mecklenburg County there are 1,068 registered sex offenders.

“Utilize technology today. If you wonder where these folks are when you’re going into a neighborhood. Make sure you just go ahead and just check and find out is there anyone in the neighborhood that you need to be concerned with,” Irwin said.

Traditionally, the sheriff’s department checks in with sex offenders on and around the Halloween holiday.

The purpose of the checks is to verify the address of the offender and also to see if there’s anything going on that deputies should be concerned about.

The department’s goal during this holiday operation is to make contact with each registered offender in the county. Last year, they verified 84 percent of the sex offenders and continued to track down the remaining offenders in the days that followed.
