Alcohol and texting contributes to fatal crash in Gastonia

GASTONIA, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A 20-year-old Gastonia man was charged after police say alcohol and texting while driving led to a fatal crash in Gastonia Saturday evening. 

Gastonia Police say the crash occurred on Robinwood Rd. & Seth Ct. around 10:04 pm Saturday.

Steven Lewis Ward, 58, of Gastonia, was pronounced dead on scene after his vehicle was struck head-on by Clarence Gilbert Bailey III, 20, of Gastonia. Bailey was taken to Caromont Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Bailey was charged with felony death by motor vehicle, felony hit & run, driving while impaired, texting while driving, and several other charges. He was booked at the Gaston County Jail and given a $270,000 bond. 

The Gastonia Police Department Traffic Enforcement Bureau is investigting.
