9-year-old injured in shooting talks about her recovery

STATESVILLE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — Nine-year-old Shakeya Jones is the definition of strong.

The young girl is recovering after bullets entered her left arm and foot. Her family says several other bullets grazed her tiny body, including across her chest. She was in bed asleep in the early morning hours when the shooting took place.

“I got shot, but I didn’t feel myself get shot, because it’s hard to feel yourself get shot when you first wake up. And then all of a sudden, like, I heard fireworks or something going on in the house and that’s when I realized it was gunshots,” she said.

She’s been in and out of hospital for the past two weeks, going into surgery after surgery. She has nerve damage in her arm which prevents her from moving or feeling it.

“I told her they need to make a superhero after her, like you know, how they got the women superheroes? They need to make an incredible hulk version of her,” said her mom, La’Caroll Withers.

This stems from a January 9 incident in Statesville where dozens of shots were fired in a residential community on Caldwell Street.

“They said anywhere between six months to a year for recovery. They didn’t necessarily say it would be 100% recovery,” said the child’s aunt, Carolyn Withers.

One thing is for certain, Shakeya won’t be going back to the home where the shooting happened. Neither will her younger brother, who was also inside the home when the shooting happened. He wasn’t injured.

Shakeya has a long medical journey ahead of her. Her family members are asking for help with medical expenses and have created this GoFundMe page.

They’re also asking for answers from the public regarding this case. There have been no arrest.

In addition to Shakeya’s injuries, two adults who were inside the home were shot. We’re told those family members are expected to make a full recovery.

We reached out to investigators for an update on the case. They responded with the following statement:

“This Case is still under active investigation by our collaborative efforts with the NC SBI, ATF, and Iredell Co. Sheriff’s Office. We are making some positive headway in these cases.  Any information that can be released, we will release when we are able to do so.”
