The 88th annual Mallard Creek Barbecue is kicking off on Thursday. It’s where pork meets politics! It’s a chance of local candidates to win folks’ vote this election season.

The event begins at 10 a.m. at the Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church community house.

Volunteers started prepping early Thursday morning, cooking nearly 15,000 pounds of barbecue, preparing almost two tons of coleslaw, and brewing 400 gallons of coffee.

Nearly 20,000 people are expected to attend the 88th annual event, which began as a fundraiser when the church was under construction during the Great Depression. The church said they couldn’t pay their contractor so they started a barbecue to raise money.

Dozen began showing up, including politicians, hoping to take advantage of the large crowds and get a vote. A handshake, smile and eye contact go a long way for some voters.
