Four fisherman were rescued Saturday afternoon at the bottom of Mt. Island Dam after their boat capsized.
Firefighters from Mt. Holly, Cook’s, Lucia, & East Gaston Fire Departments responded after receiving the 911 call.
According to firefighters, the fisherman tied their boat to the bottom of the dam to fish. Shortly afterwards, the dam turned on two additional draft tubes causing the water to churn and then capsizing the boat, throwing all 4 into the water. None of the fisherman were injured.
Firefighters offer these important tips when fishing near a dam:
- Never tie your boat off at the bottom or near a dam. You never know when the dam may begin to move water through it.
- Make sure there are enough life jackets for every occupant of the boat.
- Pay attention to all of the warning signs posted on and around the water.
