2017 CMPD stats show violent crime up; overall crime down


CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — According to CMPD stats, the department ended 2017 with 85 homicides compared to 68 in the previous year. 

Rapes also increased in 2017 from 306 to 273 the year before. 

Aggravated assaults, burglary, vehicle thefts, total larceny and arson all decreased in 2017 from the previous year. 

In 2017, nearly 200,000 attended community engagements functions with CMPD. 

Chief Kerr Putney stated that in 2018 his department was to step up the community relations. 

One of those neighborhood’s the city will focus on is the Lakewood Avenue neighborhood in West Charlotte. 

Jamall Kinard, the President of the Lakewood Neighborhood Alliance, reached out to Chief Putney once he moved to the area last spring. 

“When you have that kind of stake in the game you want make sure you protect your investment  and two to be part of the change,” said Kinard. 

With the 2018 underway the Lakewood community is looking forward to being one of those communities at the epicenter of curving the violent crime the city saw in 2017.
