1 dead after striking multiple trees in south Charlotte crash


CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — A man faces charges after he drove off the road and struck four trees in a fatal crash Sunday morning in south Charlotte according to CMPD.

The crash involved one car on Runnymede Lane near Barclay Downs Drive around 1:20a.m.

A small memorial is now at the scene. Friends tell FOX 46 Charlotte the victim in the crash is the mother of a 3-year-old girl. 

Officials said the driver, Matthew Michael Harvie, was driving his 2006 Acura on Runnymede Lane when he ran off the roadway into a curve. The vehicle began to cross the intersection when it struck a large tree, split apart and hit three other trees before overturning.

Police say the passenger, Mary Stephens Brooks, was pronounced dead on the scene. Harvie was taken to CMC-Main with minor injuries.

According to officials, alcohol and speed were both factors in the crash. Harvie is charged with felony death by vehicle, driving while impaired and reckless driving. He is currently in custody at the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
