1 dead after shooting at Huntersville Walmart; person of interest in custody

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) — Shots rang out in the produce section of this Huntersville Walmart Monday night, turning the store into a crime scene.

“I heard ‘boom, boom, boom,’” one shopper told FOX 46.

On Nov. 5, first responders were called to the Walmart at 11145 Bryton Town Center Dr. for reports of a person with a gunshot wound. The victim, a black man, was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic.

“People thought something fell, then realized it was gun shots, people panicked,” an employee said.

Huntersville Police say one of their own was inside at the time.

“One of our officers was inside and thought he heard gunshots and called for back up,” Huntersville Police Chief Cleveland Spurill.

Police confirmed that a person of interest has been taken into custody, and others were arrested for involvement in an altercation. The shooting happened near the produce section of the store.

“We rushed people out. My grandma and great grandma were in the store. I ran in to get them out,” another shopper said.

Officials on scene could be heard telling witnesses to get on the ground and the Walmart was placed on lockdown.

“People went running for the exits, both of the exits.”

The shooting hits too close to home for Denise Burton and those who are regulars at this store.

“I don’t want to be a sitting duck. As soon as coast was clear I got my daughter. I didn’t know if it was a terrorist with everything that’s happening today you just don’t want to be sitting there,” Burton said.

Walmart released a statement on Tuesday to FOX 46:

“We are deeply saddened by what has happened. We are thankful for the quick actions by the Huntersville Police Department and their arrest of those believed responsible for this crime. We are working closely with law enforcement. Since this is an active investigation, we will refer additional questions to them.”
